Careers

At gne we strongly believe in supporting our people and giving them the support and encouragement they need to develop their careers and progress within the company.

If this sounds like the sort of place you would like to work, have a read through our Case Studies and get in touch with us about current vacancies.

Case Study : Sarah Mather – Customer Service Manager

Sarah joined gne in June 2010 straight from university as a trainee in our Customer Services Team. Sarah gained product knowledge about envelopes and learnt how to deal with customers from working alongside the rest of our experienced staff, and then quickly progressed to look after some of gne’s key customers as part of the Sales Team in June 2012.

As a Sales Executive Sarah looked after over £3 million of business, and learnt how to grow new accounts for the business.

Sarah says” I thoroughly enjoyed working in the Sales Team. I loved the satisfaction of winning an order and seeing it progress and exceed the customer’s expectations! I also enjoyed going to visit customers and develop strong relationships with them”.

In March 2014 Sarah was asked by one of the Directors if she would consider taking on the role of Customer Services Manager. This was an opportunity and a challenge that Sarah felt she could not miss.

She says “I feel that I have learnt so much more in my role as Customer Services Manager and that my experience in both Sales and Customer Services helps me manage the team effectively and successfully. I feel that I have really progressed during my first four years at GNE”.

Case Study : Adam Thomas – Sales Executive

Adam joined gne in March 2014 as a Customer Service Trainee. After a few months of initial training Adam took on the responsibility of managing some of our large client accounts. Adam’s career has progressed rapidly within gne and he has now moved to Sales, where he is responsible for developing existing accounts and bringing on board new business.

Born and bred in Leeds, Adam is a Business Studies graduate from Leeds Metropolitan University and has been in the Army Reserves since 2010.

Adam says “The best thing about gne is the people I work with – they are good fun and always there to help - in fact every day is a learning experience and can present a new challenge”.

New Graduate Recruitment Scheme

gne has developed links with two local universities, Leeds Beckett and Huddersfield, to offer placement roles to undergraduate business students. The first two students have recently started work with us in Sales and Customer Services, and will benefit from gaining a practical understanding of how the business theories and methodologies taught at university can be implemented within a real business.

Case Study - Ben Hewison

I am currently at Leeds Beckett University studying Business and Management, specialising in Sales. I aspire to have a sales based career, and would love to run my own business one day or manage my own team.

The best thing about doing a placement is gaining an understanding of how a real life business works. My placement at GNE has already taught me things that could not be taught in a lecture theatre, such as working in a high pressured environment, time management and organisational skills, all of which are vital for me to succeed in my placement role.

Despite only having been at GNE for a couple of months I really feel at home within the company. Everyone has been really welcoming and more than helpful in dealing with any questions I have – and there are usually plenty of them!

The step up from university to my placement was one that surprised me. I have always had a part-time job right from the age of sixteen, but even that wasn’t enough to prepare me. My placement at GNE has already helped me become a lot more organised, responsible and is helping me to gain knowledge and understanding of the areas which I study at university.

The best thing about gne is the friendly and positive atmosphere around the office, no matter how stressful the day has been. I really appreciate how I am treated like any other member of the company and not just a student on a placement.

The main surprise since joining gne is just how complex manufacturing an envelope actually is. I expected my role to be fairly straightforward. “It’s only an envelope, how hard can it be?” I never knew there was so many ways to manufacture and print.

I think the two things that will help me contribute to GNE are my determination and work ethic. I try to be as responsible as possible and want to be seen as a member of the team that can be trusted with complex tasks – whether I am an undergraduate or not.

Case Study – Josh Butler

I’m studying Marketing and Advertising Management at Leeds Beckett University. My placement at gne really relates to the Direct Mail and Customer Relationship Management elements of my course.

The best thing about the year’s placement at gne is not only gaining knowledge relevant to my course, but also working in a business environment, learning communication skills and developing a work ethic different to that at university. The first few weeks at gne were an eye opener - going from university hours to a full working week was a big shock, and it took me a week or two to get used to it.

The best thing about gne is the staff. I feel like I can approach the Sales Team for help and advice when I need it – they’re really supportive. There’s a real good team spirit at gne - that makes a difference and makes you want to come to work. The industry is complex – gne is not only part of the envelope industry but also part of the print industry. Understanding the different markets and competitors can be confusing at first.

I think I’ve made a contribution to the dynamic atmosphere at gne. I try to be positive all the time and make people laugh, as well as ensuring that my work is done to the best of my ability.
